Ophelia C Smothers-Taylor

On Thursday, August 13th 2026, Ophelia Christine Smothers Taylor, affectionately known as Chris, passed away in her home in Redwood City, California. Chris was born on July 19, 1955, in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late Alice Beverly and James Porterfield. 

Chris graduated from Parker Highschool in Birmingham, Alabama. During high school, she was trained to be a nurse. Shortly after graduating, her adventurous heart led her to the Bay Area, CA where she worked as a private nurse. In California, she met and married her husband, the late Wilson. 

Chris was a lover of life. An entrepreneur and a self-starter, she fiercely advocated for others. She wanted to help everyone to have and be the best version of themselves. Chris liked to stay connected. She had a standing call with several friends and family as well as community time with neighbors. Chris encouraged those in her life to “fly like the wind” and to “go learn something.” 

She often said, “I’m here for the joy”. Joy is what she gave to everyone she met. Whether it was leading a community puzzle with the residents in her building. Hanging out with those she affectionately called her “Golden Girls” or sharing meals with her neighbor Bob. She was a builder of community and happiness. 

Chris leaves to cherish her memory her children: daughter Jamila (Chereese), son Abayomi , and bonus daughter Esmerelda (Marvin), and grandchildren Dante and Logan. Her siblings: Mary Ann, Eva (Morris), Sydney (Queen), Michael, Kent, and Sheila. Her nephews, Sydney Marvin (Brittney) and Alexander. Her dear friends: Cynthia, Anne, & Berman. And a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.  

A memorial service will be held on October 11th from 2-4 pm at Cooley Landing Education Center 2100 Bay Road East Palo Alto, CA 94303.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that those wishing to help consider a monetary contribution or meal, as they are traveling from out of town to settle their loved one's affairs.
